We just completed our first week of distributing animal and human food alongside Roatan Because We Care and the SOL Foundation to local families facing dire economic hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic and collapse of our tourism industry.
But before we share how many pounds of food we distributed and what areas we reached, we’d like to mention a special little detail. When we arrived in each community, Nidia would introduce Roatan Animal Support and advise the group that we had food for their pets.
EVERY SINGLE time, all the people clapped and cheered.
Keep in mind that many people in these communities have literally been out of food for days, yet they expressed so much joy and relief that they could now provide some nourishment to their pets. Such humbling moments we witnessed.
So, thank you so much to our amazing community of supporters. We couldn’t do this without your financial support and hearts of gold. We will keep our food relief campaign on-going throughout this crisis in hopes that we can continue helping to relieve part of the burden many pet owners now face, struggling to provide food for their families and beloved pets.
Unfortunately, a couple pounds of food doesn’t last a dog or cat very long. Perhaps a few meals. As the tourism industry in Roatan isn’t expected to begin recovery until late this year, it is critical that we have the on-going financial resources and stamina to continue weekly food drops until our communities can get back on their feet.
Last week we reached the communities of Hottest Sparrow, Blue Parrot SB, Crawfish Rock, Mann Trap, La Brisas, Gravel Bay, Consolation Bight, Port of Roatan, Nicaragua, Punta Caribe and Wilma. A total of 1,061 pounds of dog & cat food was distributed.
